Hvar and Korcula: Two Islands in One Day

We spent our last day on Hvar relaxing on sun loungers on the rocks down from our apartment. We enjoyed our first sleep in, and strolled along the rocks until we found the loungers with the best spot and with a ladder into the water. You had to pay to use them, but it was only about 6 pounds each for the whole day. Much nicer than sitting on the rocks!

It was extremely hot, as we were sitting in the midday sun with no shade. So we used up almost a whole bottle of sunscreen in just a few hours.

We had to keep jumping into the sea to keep cool, trying to avoid the huge amounts of sea urchins everywhere. Unfortunately Bradley's foot (in a sea shoe) brushed against a spiky urchin as he swam past. It was lucky he was wearing shoes, as he found about 10 spikes when he got out, and only two had made it into his foot. Unsure why they say to wear shoes if they don't completely protect your feet!

So he had to wander down to the bar down the road and find a safety pin to dig out the spikes, a painful reminder to be super careful when swimming in Croatia.

Enjoying the last of our amazing view

In the late afternoon, we headed back to our apartment to pack and made our way down to the Harbour to catch the ferry to Korcula (pronounced Korchula).

Korcula is about an hour from Hvar Town, between Hvar and Dubrovnik. It's often called the Mini Dubrovnik, and it does look very similar with its fortified walls surrounding the towns.

Our ferry to Korcula

We fell in love with Korcula as soon as we arrived, it's so cute, with lot's of palm trees and tiny alleyways, and lot's of cute little shops. The owner of our apartment met us at the ferry docks, and gave us the choice of the attic room or the street level room.

We chose the attic room, which had a lovely view of the alleyway below, and a washing machine which was a huge draw! Though the street level room did have a tropical fish tank which looked lovely.

After having a shower and finally being able to wash the sea and sand off our clothes after a week, we headed out for dinner and to explore a bit of Korcula.

Korcula is famous for being the supposed birthplace of Marco Polo, however there is no actual proof to this claim. It doesn't stop them from advertising this to everyone, every second shop and restaurant is called Marco Polo. It's very confusing if someone tells you to meet them at Marco Polo restaurant!

We actually ended up having dinner at the Marco Polo restaurant next to our apartment, having been recommended by the owner of our apartment.

I had a meat platter with about five different types of meat. The meal was huge, but all the meat was cooked perfectly. I think there was chicken, sausage, pork, veal and beef. Bradley had the pasta, which was good, but just couldn't compare to my meat platter!
