Christmas Lights along Oxford Street and Regent Street

It's that time of year in London when the icy wind has appeared seemingly overnight, gloves, coats and scarves start appearing and it feels like the middle of the night at 4.00 p.m. in the afternoon.

It's always hard to go to work and come home in the dark, and having to stock up on cold and flu remedies as the first of my many Winter colds start arriving, but it's also the time of year when twinkling lights are strung up along the London's streets and the first of the Christmas ads start playing on TV.

Christmas in London is one of my favourite times of the year. Coming from New Zealand where we'll usually have a BBQ outside in the sunshine on Christmas Day, being in London where it's cold and often has the first snowfall before Christmas, it just seems more traditional and it's easy to start getting into the Christmas spirit as soon as Halloween has passed.

Earlier this week we went for a stroll along Oxford Street and Regent Street as they always have amazing light displays.

Oxford Street is usually completely rammed full of people at all hours of the day, especially on weekends, so we tend to avoid going anywhere near it. However on a chilly Autumn weeknight, it was relatively clear of people and we could take our time wandering the streets and admiring the lights.

Selfridges Department Store always has amazing window displays, every window had a different theme. I love the window dedicated to Charlotte Olympia's Kitty Flats, and the window with everything made out of Gingerbread was also beautiful.

Our next stop was South Molton Street, where they have huge archways all lit up along the street.

Our next stop was John Lewis, which has created amazing animals outside of household objects. They are so well done, we didn't actually realise at first that they were made out of scrubbing brushes, irons and vacuum cleaners.

Loved this bunny

The lights along Regent Street were my favourite, everyone depicting a different bit of the 12 Days of Christmas. Definitely better than the horrendous Marmite themed lights from last year.

Just round the corner was Carnaby Street, which always has great Christmas displays. This year it was themed around the Year of the Robin, and had several huge 3D Robin's along the street with hundreds of smaller Robins scattered overhead.

With just over four weeks to go until Christmas, wandering the streets of London has definitely put us in the Christmas spirit!
