The Turkish seaside town of Kas

After a long trip from Goreme, we arrived in Kas at 3.00 a.m. in the morning under cover of darkness. We had driven along the coast from Antalya along very windy roads so we were glad when we finally arrived and tumbled straight into bed.

Kas is a small seaside town on the Southern Coast of Turkey, a three hour drive from the closest airport and popular with divers thanks to its amazing sea life and several shipwrecks along the coast.

Because of its location, it is still relatively unspoilt when it comes to tourists, especially compared to its neighbours Kalkan and Fethiye, both popular with British tourists.

After a busy week, we were looking forward to spending four nights relaxing before heading to the even sleepier town of Cirali back along the coast towards Antalya.

We woke up the next morning to beautiful blue skies and an even more beautiful view from our balcony. We slowly got up and got ready for breakfast, which was delicious and huge. They just kept bringing out more and more dishes, which was fantastic because we were starving since all we'd eaten since about 7.00 p.m. the previous night was a couple of muesli bars and some pretzels.

We also got to play with this cute kitten

Our hotel

Kas town is very pretty, with the harbour being the main focus, and a maze of winding streets through the town.

Kas is located along the Lycian Way, a long distance hiking trail along the Turkish coast, and one of the top walking trails in the world. The cliffs surrounding Kas are full of rock tombs and there is an old amphitheatre just outside town.

We had no plans for the day, but once we reached the harbour we saw small boats that would take us to the beaches further along the coast at Limanagzi Bay. There are only a couple of tiny beaches in Kas town, with most people choosing to visit Limanagzi or the local beach clubs in Kas.

There are five different beach clubs in Limanagzi Bay, and without knowing much about any of them, aside from the fact they are free as long as you order food or drink, we hopped off at the second one the boat took us too, which also looked like it had the nicest beach and also the quietest.

We picked out a couple of loungers and stayed there the entire day, ordering lunch from the cafe, but otherwise just reading and swimming. It was the perfect way to spend the day after such a long previous day.

In the late afternoon we got back on the little boat and arrived back in Kas, where for the first time we got to explore the town.

Kas is only a small town, you can easily walk around in about half an hour or so, and full of lots of lovely shops, selling clothing and souvenirs, plus a few selling fake designer handbags.

Still love these lanterns!

Kas is a sleepy town during the day, but in the evening everyone arrives back from their various day trips and it gets quite busy. Still the majority of people around seemed to be locals, rather than tourists.

We watched the sun going down from the roof terrace at our hotel with a glass of wine. The sky was so clear, and the colours of the sunset reminded us of watching the sunrise in Sicily.

We went for dinner at a place recommended by our hotel that had over 30 different types of mezze. We didn't end up having a main course, just ordered about 6 different dishes which were all amazing, we were so full afterwards!

We woke up the next day to an amazing view from our bed. The plan for the day was to visit the amphitheatre outside Kas town and then spend the rest of the day at one of the beach clubs in town.

The Kas Hellenistic theatre was built in the 1st century and is still very well preserved, following a restoration that was completed in 2011. The theatre has amazing views out over Kas and towards Kastellorizo.

It was so hot by the time we got to the theatre, the weather in Kas was a lot warmer than the rest of Turkey. Luckily the Turkish locals are used to seeing tourists in shorts and swimming togs, so I didn't get the same kind of attention I got in Istanbul which meant I could finally wear shorts!

After exploring the theatre we headed back to town and chose the nicest looking beach club to spend the rest of the day. We chose the one closest to Kalkuk Cacil Beach (Lilttle Pebble Beach), since the other clubs only had ladders directly into the sea which was quite rough, whilst at this one we could get in directly from the beach.

Little Pebble Beach - beautiful beach but the water was absolutely freezing!

We spent the rest of the day at the beach club, having lunch, reading and swimming. We had some amazing views over the Kas harbour and we stayed until the late afternoon, before heading back to the hotel to get ready for dinner.

We had an amazing time in Kas, just relaxing and exploring a different side of Turkey to Istanbul and Cappadocia. We also took a day trip to the Greek Island of Kastellorizo, which is only a 30 minute ferry ride from Kas, but that deserves its own separate post. Kas is such a beautiful little town, hopefully it stays as untouched by tourism as it currently is and it's definitely worth a stop on your Turkey tour.
