A Day Trip from Kas to Kastellorizo

One of the best day trips you can do from Kas is to the nearby Greek island of Kastellorizo. Kastellorizo (also called Megisti by the Greek and Meis by Turkish people) is the easternmost Greek island and is only 2 km across the sea from Kas, about 30 minutes by ferry.

The ferry leaves from Kas harbour at 10.30 a.m. and returns from Kastellorizo at 4.00 p.m. The night before going you need to hand over your passports to the ferry company and they will fill out all the required documentation to enable you to travel from Turkey to Greece with no issues.

Upon arrival in Kastellorizo we had to go through Customs, which didn't involve much except handing over the passports we were just given back on the boat and continuing through the tiny building and into Greece.

Kastellorizo is only a tiny island, with about 500 permanent residents, so there's not too much to do. It looks very Greek with its white and brightly coloured houses.

The harbour is the focal point of the island, with several restaurants and a couple of shops and hotels. The island is tiny at only six kilometres long and three kilometres wide.

Upon arrival almost everyone from the ferry headed towards the town, so we headed in the exact opposite direction and found ourselves walking along a cliffside walkway with amazing views towards Kas.

After about ten minutes of walking, we found ourselves in a tiny little cove with a couple of locals already swimming and enjoying the sunshine. It was already really hot, so we decided to stop here away from everyone else and have a swim.

The water was so clear, with easy access into the water either walking over some rocks from the shore or a ladder directly into the sea. The sea was much warmer here than the previous day in Kas!

After cooling down in the sea and drying off in the sunshine, we headed back to town for some lunch.

As Kastellorizo is in Greece, Euros are used, with only one ATM on the island. Having paid for everything in the extremely cheap Turkish Lira, it was a bit of a shock to have to pay Euro prices!

We ordered a few of dishes to share, with fresh calamari and octopus, vine leaves and chickpea croquettes.

During our meal we were watched by several cats. Cats are everywhere on the island, but they don't seem to be as well taken care of as the cats and dogs in Turkey. Though if our restaurant was anything to go by, they certainly get fed enough from the tourists!

After lunch we walked further around the harbour, wandering past a beautiful church and some more brightly coloured houses.

We spent the rest of the afternoon at the quiet cove we had discovered earlier in the day, swimming in the calm sea and sleeping in the sunshine before heading back to the harbour to get on the return ferry to Kas.

We got our passports back that evening, picking them up from the ferry company and providing me with another Turkish stamp in my passport! I get so few stamps in my UK passport, so I get excited whenever I get one!

We spent the rest of the evening reading on our balcony, enjoying the amazing view and watching the sun go down behind Kastellorizo. It's not everyday that you get to visit two countries in one afternoon.
