After a lovely sunny weekend visiting the beautiful town of Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast, we woke up early on Monday morning all ready to head to Capri. Capri is a stunning and mountainous island located a 30 minute hydrofoil ride from Sorrento.
It's well known for being a playground for the rich and famous, most of the taxis are convertibles and the stores in Capri town cater almost exclusively for the more well funded traveller.
Upon leaving the apartment, we realised the weather was not nearly as nice as it had been the last couple of days. There were big black clouds hanging over Sorrento, and while it wasn't raining, there were strong winds.
We arrived at the Harbour to see that the sea was really rough and I began to get apprehensive about getting the ferry. We were getting a hydrofoil, which is a super fast ferry that almost skims the water. Great in calm waters, but super bumpy when it's rough.
As soon as we left Sorrento it was clear it was not going to be a good ride, Bradley and I took some motion sickness tablets to try and ward off any nausea but it was really FAR too late for them to be effective.
After a long extremely rough and bumpy ride, resulting in my vomiting into a plastic bag we luckily had in my purse, we arrived in Capri. It was only slightly calming to see I wasn't the only one being sick and everyone left the boat a lot worse for wear. Embarrassingly a South African lady saw I was upset and gave me a long hug which only made it worse, but so nice of her to stop and try to make me feel better since she was clearly upset too!
Thankful to be back on dry land, we headed along the Marina to our hotel. We were staying just up from Marina Grand, in a small hotel overlooking the harbour as hotels in Capri town are extremely expensive.
We found that staying in the Marina was a lot quieter than Capri town and not as touristy. Plus we could get there from the ferry in five minutes and didn't have to line up for the Funicular that takes you up to the town.
The amazing view from our room
Our hotel was painted bright pink with lovely blue and white furnishings and an amazing view from our terrace overlooking the beach and the Marina.
The first thing we did was lie down for about half an hour to try and settle our stomachs and clear our heads. With that and a hot shower we were ready to leave the hotel and start exploring Capri.
We grabbed something light to eat before heading up in the Funicular to Capri town. We stopped for a while upon reaching the top to just admire the beautiful views over the Gulf of Naples, all the way to Naples and Sorrento.
Feeling a lot better!
Capri town is full of winding alleyways, and is known for its handmade leather sandals, a bit out of my price range at up to 200 euros each.
Our first stop was the Gardens of Augustus, which is a lovely garden comprised of several terraces overlooking the famous Faraglioni and Marina Piccola, the second Marina on the other side of the Island.
The Faraglioni are three huge rocks that rise up out of the sea. They are home to a small blue lizard, the only place in the world they can be found.
The best way to view these huge rocks is from the sea, but I was not keen to get back onto the water at all until we had to leave on Wednesday, so I had to settle for the view from land!
There is a winding pathway that leads from the Gardens of Augustus down to Marina Piccola, however this was closed while we were visiting which was a shame because it looked like a lovely walk.
After admiring the view, we headed back into the town for some window shopping along Via Camerelle, the most expensive shopping on the island.
We watched the sunset from Via Tragara, a terrace overlooking the Faraglioni and away from the crowds.
We ended our day with a delicious dinner of handmade pizza and pasta at a small restaurant in Marina Grande, a relaxing end to a day that started rather terribly!
As usual the photo's are great, you get such great places to stay in, and I love your trousers. xxx
