We woke up early on Sunday ready for a full day in York. Since we'd spent the entire day before exploring the seaside towns on the coast, this was our first real look at the city of York.
We were really lucky, and left the house to find the sun was shining, and while it was still cold, it was a lot better than the torrential rain we'd been having in London.
We had deliberately gotten up early in order to have breakfast at the famous Betty's Tea Rooms, which we hoped wouldn't be too busy first thing in the morning.
Betty's is mainly famous for their afternoon high tea, but their breakfast's are fantastic too.
We arrived just after 9.30 a.m. and we were able to get seated straight away, no mean feat since just after 10.00 a.m. there was a line out the door!
Lot's of yummy treats
Bradley got the full English breakfast and I got a potato cake with eggs and bacon, both were so delicious, and huge, which was good since it was't cheap to eat there...
Chocolate bears and Corgi Biscuits!
Bradley's personal jewellery store
After breakfast we headed off to York Minster, we arrived while there was a service happening, so we sat at the back and enjoyed Church on a Sunday morning. I don't think Bradley was as happy about this as me, but we sat there for about half an hour before moving on to more sightseeing.
York Minster is lovely, not as grand as some other churches we have been too, but it was the first one where we could join the service without having to stay for the entire time.
I managed to sneak some photos from the back row. I wasn't sure if photos were allowed or not, so I took some while the staff were looking the other way!
We went for a walk outside the walls, which was deserted. There were daffodils everywhere, and it was nice to be away from the crowds for a while.
Jubilee Bunting
We stopped and had lunch at Ambience Cafe which had great reviews on Trip Advisor. Still not starving after our huge breakfast, we shared a ploughman's platter which was delicious.
After lunch, we went for a stroll on top of the York Walls. It really gives you the feeling of being in medieval times and gave us a great view of the Minster.
Bradley pretending to be Jon Snow, guarding the walls.. I'm not sure Jon Snow gets a takeaway coffee though.
We walked past Betty's again in the afternoon, and this was the line outside. So I have to say I felt pretty smug having gotten up early..
In the afternoon we decided to do the York Cat Trail. There are lots of cat statues all over York in various places, so we stopped at the York Glass store and picked up a map that gives you clues on how to find them.
It's pretty fun, and a good way to see parts of York you might not otherwise know about. It was also hilarious standing and turning in circles trying to find the sometimes tiny, or very high up, cat statues!
This took up a good few hours, but we did manage to find every single one!
After our afternoon of cat hunting, we stopped at a Tapa's bar for dinner. While not as great as the Tapa's we had in Seville, they were still pretty delicious.
We had a lot of great food in York actually, it's a lovely little city and we really loved being able to explore the parts of England that my Nana was from. Everyone was so friendly, and we just loved their accents!
I agree York is lovely, Aunty Ngaire said the same about Aunt Betty's but its great you did it.
ReplyDeleteAs usual lovely food photos glad to see you aren't starving.I would love to do the cat tour what fun.
Yes we loved York and if it had been better weather we would have spent all day there exploring more of the city,it will have to be next time..And yes the breakfast at Betty's looked great-was it expensive like our afternoon tea in Harrogate?
ReplyDeleteLovely recounting of your trip once again, did you buy me a Peter Rabbit that were on sale? Were the accents like Nana's? xxx
ReplyDeleteYes it was quite expensive, I think it was over £30 for breakfast, tea and coffee. It was delicious though so I think it was worth it.
