We spent our second day on the Gulf of Naples visiting three beautiful towns on the Amalfi Coast, Positano, Ravello and Amalfi.
Still feeling a bit woozy and headachy from the previous day, we decided to get the ferry there and back rather than the bus. The bus goes along the coast and the roads are very windy, and I figured I'd be affected by motion sickness more than usual. The only downside with getting the ferry is that we had less time on the Amalfi Coast as there are only a couple of ferries a day between Sorrento and the coast.
The upside was we weren't going to be crammed onto a hot bus with heaps of other tourists and we'd get amazing views of Positano and Amalfi from the water.
We left Sorrento late in the morning, making sure to grab a huge bottle of water before we went. We didn't want a repeat of the previous day, and the weather was already shaping up to be over 26 degrees.
The views along the coast from Sorrento to Positano were amazing. We sat on the top deck of the ferry so we got a good view of the towns perched on the edge of the cliffs.
The view coming into Positano
Positano is one of the prettiest towns in Italy, with the entire town perched on the edge of the cliff. There are a lot of stairs to climb as you explore the town, and the winding streets are lined with shops as we walked higher up the cliffs.
While the beach and the lower parts of Positano were quite busy, once we walked a bit higher up, the tourists all disappeared and we had the amazing view over the town and coast to ourselves.
After taking in the views, we headed back down for lunch. We stopped at a small restaurant called La Cambusa that seemed to be popular with locals. The food was some of the best we've ever had in Italy, and probably the best we had while on the coast.
We started with tomato and mozzarella Bruschetta, followed by freshly made pasta. Everything was so delicious, though we had to slightly rush the last few bites so we could make the next ferry from Positano to Amalfi.
It was only a short 15 minute ferry from Positano to Amalfi, and while the views between the two weren't as stunning as earlier along the coast, we got a good view of Amalfi as we approached.
Coming into Amalfi Town
We didn't plan on seeing much of Amalfi Town, our next destination was Ravello, which is high up on the cliffs above Amalfi.
We jumped onto the first bus heading towards Ravello, which is 20 minutes uphill on a road that hugs the cliffside. Ravello is a peaceful and charming town, and our favourite on the Amalfi Coast, full of quaint cobbled streets and views for miles over the coast and surrounding countryside,
While Amalfi and Positano were bustling and busy, and popular with tourists, Ravello seemed a world away, with no cars and with hardly any tourists. The exception being tour groups of older travellers, on a whistle-stop tour of the Amalfi Coast.
Like everywhere along the coast, there were lots of Ceramic shops, full of brightly coloured plates and cups and lots of lemon themed objects.
We saw lots of these little lizards everywhere
Relaxing in the sunshine
After exploring the town we headed back down to Amalfi. We only had about 45 minutes until the last ferry home to Sorrento, so we only had time to explore the main square before it was time to go home.
The heat was finally beginning to wear us down, and having forgotten to put sunscreen on, we were feeling pretty hot and tired, so we stopped at a Gelateria for some Gelato. It was good to sit down and enjoy our Gelato while people watching. It was the only time we had to relax all day!
Amalfi Harbour
We arrived back in Sorrento as the sun was setting, so we had some beautiful views of the sun going down behind the cliffs.
Lovely photos we drove to these towns from Sorrento so the ferry seems such a better idea.
