Visiting the Bath Christmas Markets

At the beginning of December, we took a day trip to the Bath Christmas markets. We first visited Bath about a month after we first arrived in London in 2010, and have been wanting to go back ever since.

We caught an early train out of London Paddington, and finally got to see the Paddington Bear statue that we kept forgetting to look for every time we went there!

Paddington Bear!

We arrived in Bath mid morning, along with lots of other people. The Bath Christmas markets are some of the most popular in England, with thousands of people visiting each year, and they are only open for the first two weeks of December.

The markets are right outside Bath Abbey, with a few other stalls scattered throughout the city.

There were lots of lovely handmade products for sale, mostly with independent stalls. With a lot of the Christmas Markets in London the stock on sale seems to repeat every third stall, but every stall in Bath seemed to have something different.

Having missed breakfast, and after only having a coffee on the train, our next stop was the Sally Lunn shop.

The weather outside was freezing, and even with several layers on, we needed to warm up with a hot drink and a huge Sally Lunn bun. I had mine with cinnamon butter, so delicious!

The rest of the afternoon was spent leisurely exploring the various Christmas markets, and revisiting some of our favourite spots from our first trip.

I had a terrible head cold at the time, so there were lots of stops to catch my breath and to rest! My stuffed up head and very red nose are the reason there are not a lot of photo's of me from Bath!

The Pulteney Bridge - one of the most beautiful brigdes in the world

We spent a few hours sitting in the sunshine by the River Avon, enjoying one of the few sunny days we had seen in England for a good few weeks!

Once the sun started going down, it started to get a lot colder, so we headed for the warmth and beauty of Bath Abbey. Bath Abbey was founded in the 7th century, and restored during the 12th and 16th centuries.

It was lovely to sit and admire the stained glass and amazing interior, while also enjoying the warmth that the Abbey provided.

Before heading back to London, we stopped at Carluccio's, an Italian chain restaurant in London that does delicious food. We shared a yummy Italian platter and finished every last bit!

  2. Bath certainly looks like a great place to see and spend some time, we only did a quick stop. Now looking at your photos we should have stayed longer, maybe next time.
