A day at the beach in Lumbarda

We had one full day in Korcula, and we spent it at the beach in nearby Lumbarda. Lumbarda is about 4km out of Korcula town, and famous for its pretty beaches. Apparently the other side of the island has the nicest beaches, but as we only had one day we didn't want to be travelling 40km on the bus.

We woke up early and had a wander around the city of Korcula, exploring the sites we had seen briefly the night before. It had been too dark to really appreciate the beauty of the town, so it was nice to wander around the sites and shops in the daylight.

We ended up on the waterfront, and found a water taxi that would take us to the beach. It's about a 40 minute boat ride, or a 15 minute bus ride. The bus would have been quicker, but the water taxi has the added bonus of getting a tour of the other islands around Korcula.

It would have been nice to have spent a bit longer in Korcula, and explored the nearby islands. Badija in particular, with it's stunning monastery, looked lovely.

We sailed past a group of windsurfer's who seemed to be doing pretty well considering there was almost no wind.

Enjoying the sun!

We arrived in Lumbarda just after 11.30 a.m. Everyone else on the boat headed straight for the beach, but we took our time wandering through the tiny town, which was completely deserted.

The walk involved a lot of uphill walking, but we were rewarded at the top with the discovery of the little Saint Roch Church.

We continued walking around the island until we got to the Vela Przina beach. The beach is the only sandy beach we came across during our stay in Croatia, so we spent most of the day in the water, enjoying the completely sea urchin free bottom!

After a few hours in the water, we took a break and went to a nearby restaurant for lunch. I had a huge pizza, and Bradley had lasagne. Both were delicious, Croatian's really know how to do Italian food!

You can't see them, but on this tiny island there was a herd of Sheep! Not sure how they got there, or really what they eat.. but it was an unexpected surprise.

In the late afternoon we hopped back onto the water taxi and headed back to Korcula Town. We had some great views coming back into the town, and it was once again easy to see why it is called a mini Dubrovnik. They look almost identical from the water.

When we arrived into port, there was nowhere for us to park. So the driver pulled up next to two other boats, and we had to climb over them to get to shore. This didn't seem that safe to me, but luckily no-one fell in!

We were lucky enough to be in Korcula on the night of their Half New year celebrations. It's a huge celebration, and the whole town is involved in a parade along the water front, and afterwards they have dancing and performances.

They also have food stalls selling delicious burgers. We grabbed one each, but really could have shared it since they were so huge!

  2. My general impression of Lumbarda was very good, so I can only recommend anyone to consider this as a place to stay, when you make summer holiday on Korcula island. An invaluable resource for travellers looking for cheap accommodation in Lumbarda can be found here.

  3. Cool post! Should you be coming back, don't miss to check out the south-western side of Korcula, the nature over there is extraordinary.
